Know Your HELOC Options
MYTH VS. REALITY: Not All HELOCs Are the Same
When someone says “HELOC,” it can sound like there's only one type.
There isn't.
The classic HELOC structure generally provides a longer draw period — often 10 years — during which available funds may be borrowed, repaid and potentially borrowed again.
Today, homeowners may also encounter newer HELOC programs with different draw periods, rates, fees, payment structures and qualification requirements.
Some digital or expedited HELOCs emphasize speed and convenience.
A 10-Year Draw HELOC may be more attractive to someone who values long-term access and potentially different pricing and fees over closing as quickly as possible.
So don't compare HELOCs based solely on the advertised interest rate.
Ask about:
How long can I access the money? What are the fees? How are payments calculated? What happens after the draw period?
The details matter.
Certain HELOC programs may also be available on qualifying second homes and investment/rental properties.
