Consider Creating a Living Legacy
What If Part of Your Children's Inheritance Could Help Them Today?
When parents think about the equity they've built in their home, the conversation often focuses on what may eventually be left to their children.
But there is another way to think about it.
A living legacy.
Some homeowners may choose to access a portion of their home equity during their lifetime to help an adult child purchase a home — perhaps assisting with a down payment, closing costs or other eligible expenses.
Instead of only leaving something behind someday, they may have an opportunity to see what their help accomplishes today.
For homeowners who don't want to refinance their existing first mortgage or add another required monthly mortgage payment, options such as a Home Equity Investment (HEI) or reverse second mortgage may be worth exploring.
That doesn't mean parents should jeopardize their own financial security to help their children.
It means home equity can sometimes be viewed as more than something to leave behind.
It may also be a resource for accomplishing something important while you're here to enjoy seeing the difference it makes.
